Christmas time in the McGregor house is a very nostalgic, grossly exaggerated celebration. We use the whole month. Don’t waste a second of it… Lots of entertaining, big tree and an even bigger lunch. All the family pull in for champers and pavlova.
We thought we would provide you with a little Christmas inspiration and a very mild dose of what the 25th December looks like in our house…
It’s all too many cooks in the kitchen adding their flair to the feast but that’s how we get the best results.
We decided to do a gorgeous summer inspired decor versus the traditional kind (although our tree, decorated by the kiddies, is pretty eclectic) to our lunch this year. Some Delicious Monster, pretty flowers and candles for the table. I think one way of getting inspired is foraging through your garden, or the neighbours 😉 Pick something green or colourful and fill your vases.
Keeping with our summer trend, we had a braai (barbecue for those not in the know). Beautiful fresh crayfish and prawns – natural and full of flavour! If these aren’t in season (or just not up your alley) you could substitute anything you want really, for us it would be lamb because, well, that’s Xmas in a roasting pan…
We served it with Lemon crushed thyme roasted potatoes; Tomato, feta, red onion and basil salad; Radish avo and pine nut salad and a Caprese tart. Way too much food of course, as one has to over cater on Christmas Day but leftovers can always be reused or given to those in need.
Dessert was a Tropical fruit chocolate pavlova (all the flavours of summer for us) – mango, granadilla and lemon curd with greek yoghurt (and maybe a hint of cream… ssshhh).
For the kiddies (and some adults) Choc dipped waffle cones with ice cream and toppings in abundance. Your imagination can run wild with ideas – Peanut Brittle, Honeycomb, Sprinkles, Caramel covered popcorn, even Popping candy! Cover with a sauce of your choice and add a Flake for luck… Voila.
