There is nothing better than finding a market that has tasty food, good music and a great location. Luckily in Cape Town we are spoilt for choice when it comes to markets, so I thought I would highlight a few in and around the Cape that I love.
The Oranjezicht City Farm Market is no new kid on the block and has been around for quite some time, this however was my first time and I cannot believe I didn’t go sooner. Located in Granger Bay, V&A Waterfront next to The Lookout event venue, it’s the ideal setting for this market as it overlooks the bay, is in walking distance from public transport and has loads of parking. What’s also really fantastic about this market is that it gives local farmers and artisanal food producers a platform to sell and showcase their produce. #localislekker
This farmer-style market is perfect to do your weekly grocery shopping with so much on offer from fresh veg, fruit, free range eggs, freshly baked bread, cheeses, nuts and plenty of freshly baked sweet treats which are very difficult to walk away from. How does one get the willpower to say no to just one s’more brownie or fresh scone with cream and jam. (I’m mean come on!)
It was great to see that loads of people come very well prepared with their own wicker shopping baskets ready to buy their fresh produce to take home. I on the other hand was not so well prepared and didn’t have a shopping bag with me, much to my disappointment, so instead I went to get breakfast in the food tent at the back. Once again spoilt for choice from smoked salmon bagels, banting croissants with egg and bacon, vegan dishes, potjies, pastries…you name it, they have it. I even spotted one or two ladies with their tupperware containers from home buying some of the delicious meals for take aways…love it!
This is one market that I really can’t wait to go back to, with my shopping bag of course 😉 They’re open every Saturday from 9am until 2pm come rain or shine, entrance is FREE and they even allow dogs inside which is great for people who want to bring their furry kids along. Catering for everyone from vegetarians, raw foodies and vegans to meat lovers or gluten and sugar free options ~ whatever your preference may be, you’ll be in for a hearty meal made with love.
I hope to see you there.
